Biomarkers and Brain Injury
In an appropriate follow-up to yesterday’s in-depth guest post on traumatic brain injury, I want to share this recent Wall Street Journal article about a new test that looks for biomarkers to help diagnose brain injury. The main company discussed in the article is Banyan Biomarkers, a company in Florida that was founded by University of Florida researchers. They are developing tests that would allow for quick and accurate diagnosis of acute head injury. The article also noted that the Department of Defense is going to award a grant to conduct a study including over 1,000 people to test the reliability and effectiveness of biomarkers to guide doctor’s treatment decisions.
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a wide-spread outcome of sports injuries, combat injuries and accidents. Over 5 million people in the US suffer from TBI related symptoms. TBI effects performance in many cognitive areas and several studies have found diminshed performance on Posit Science’s useful field of view assessment.
