A just-published, widely reviewed book, Nicholas Carr's The Shallows has sparked significant controversy. His premise is that technology is rewiring our brains, largely for the worse: we are becoming shallow, easily distracted learners for whom deep concentration and thought is more and more difficult. He relies, in part, on work from our co-founder Dr. Mike Merzenich to support his theory.
There are some thoughtful reviews on The Shallows, including one from Jonah Lehrer that points out that there's nothing new about lamenting the effects of a world-changing technology, and one from the Wall Street Journal that takes a more accepting view of Carr's thesis.
